Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club

The year 1896 was remembered as the Olympians day as the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, but for the Goldfields it is remembered as the year of the first race meeting. In the early days, the racing action was conducted on the number of tracks scattered throughout the region. Kalgoorlie-Boulder’s famous ‘Racing Round’ gets the name from the fact that the “Big Three” would conduct the race carnivals at their respective tracks. The order of the club was also altered for the fact that all of the clubs should be getting the best of weather and attendances.

The history of such is described in the terrific publication – “The Round” – a history of the first century of the racing on the Western Australia Goldfields. During World War II, this beautiful track was taken over by the military, and the Kalgoorlie-Boulder outfit was forced to race at the Kalgoorlie track.

The rivalry between the Kalgoorlie and the Boulder clubs over the years produced an odd difference of opinions and after much consideration the two clubs finally agreed to amalgamate in 1953. History shows that the vision of those responsible for the creation of the Kalgoorlie-Boulder racing Club laid down the outstanding standards of best country racing club in the Western Australia.

The Historic Museum

The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Club after so many years finally found a home for many historic items previously stored away in the trainers’ rooms. In the year 1993, the owners David Biggs, Austin and John Sarre donated $10,000 for the creation of a museum. The western end of the old tote building has now been restored and renovated to create a wonderful and unique display of these historical items.

One of the most recent exhibitions is a display of the colors, complete with the original mud which was worn by the winner of the 1995 Melbourne Cup, Damien Oliver. In connection with the big day at Flemington, there is also a 1905 Melbourne Cup replica trophy on the display which was won by the former Kalgoorlie Cup winner Blue Spec.

Each and every item in the museum is being displayed in the cabinets, the old gold collections such as old race books, enclosure passes, licenses and entrance tickets are kept wonderfully well in original shape. The walls of this historic museum are also lined with the glorious photos of the champions and unleashed crowd of that Goldfield era.
